3 Reasons Your Organisation should Hold a Strategy Session

Proximity and familiarity can create blind spots that can hinder your progress.

This is one of the reasons I host and lead strategy sessions that help reveal the underbelly of things that are seemingly working but are just performative activities that deliver inconsequential ROI.

Why should you have a strategy session, and when?

  • When you are becoming too comfortable with the current stage you are at as an organisation or brand. You have your processes set out, it is basically plug and play. Where is the challenge in doing the same things over and again?
  • When your ‘why’ as an organisation has become obsolete. You may have started your company four or 10 years ago. The business challenge that your company set out to solve may now be transformed, or you may even find that it is no longer relevant. As the world evolves, your organisation must evolve in its approach to providing solutions to people’s current or anticipated reality.
  • When it’s just not working anymore. The answer is not to give up. Go back to the beginning and ask WHY. Why did we set up this organisation and WHAT did we set up to achieve.

All functional parts of an organisation must derive its relevance from the core business objectives of the organisation.

A strategy session with yourself for your business brand will help you remain ready to take advantage of business opportunities when they show up. With Odein Ajumogobia at a recent event in Lagos, Nigeria

From sales to finance, projects to communications — there must be a direct correlation between the strategies and implementation tactics of each unit, and the business results the organisation needs to achieve to remain viable.

And yea, your strategy session is not a top-down mentorship session. It is a full-on hands on gritty session where each idea is thoroughly interrogated, where all hidden meanings are explored until the real gems are discovered.

In the last one week, I have led three of such strategy sessions and the zeal to work has been revived and there is a collective vision to work towards. One of such sessions was for Nigerian Women in PR — bookmark this post and tell me what you think of the work we will start to do in three months time 😀
